I am watching 「風林火山」(おやかたさまぁ~!)

Takeda (Harunobu) Shingen.

Takeda (Harunobu) Shingen. Looks like an Adidas ad, no?

I’m currently glued to my laptop,  engrossed in a Japanese TV drama called ‘Huurinkazan'(風林火山). The taiga series was broadcasted by NHK last year and ran for 50 epidodes. That’s alot of catching up to do for me.

It all began when I was trawling for some Gackpoid MAD videos in niconico douga and chanced upon ‘Fuurinkazan -Koppepan ‘. Some genius came up with bread related lyrics for the orchestral OP of the drama series and I got hooked on the song.

Koppepan! Jam nuttara Anpan!!!

Seeing that Gackt is acting as some warlord in the show, I decided to give the drama series a try, just to see if Gackt could act. (-w-;)

Takeda Shingen Tiger of Kai vs Nagao Kagetora Dragon of Echigo *Uhhoh!*

'Takeda Shingen' Tiger of Kai vs 'Nagao Kagetora' Dragon of Echigo *Uhhoh!*

In the end, I was completely bought over by the acting and comical antics of Uchino Masaaki as the protagonist, Yamamoto Kansuke and the flawless Kabuki-esque performance of Ichikawa Kamejirou as Takeda Harunobu (later known as Takeda Shingen).
Trailer plus interview: Uchino Masaaki (with the eye patch) is so adorable-! Uh hoh!

Gackt appeared as Nagao Kagetora (later known as Uesugi Kenshin) in the later episodes. I was too distracted by his collagen-pumped up lips and effeminate appearance to appreciate his acting. He made a fearsome warlord look like a geisha …

Kagetora was about to shoot Kansuke for failing to deliver the 100 guns on time and for refusing to betray Takeda Shingen. At that crucial moment, the guns arrived under secret order from Takeda Shingen who was worried for Kansuke’s life. Oyakatasamaaaa~~~~~vvv

Thank goodness Yamamoto Kansuke and Takeda Shingen get the most airtime. (TwT)

I’m particularly drawn to the evolving personality of Takeda Shingen which Ichikawa Kamejirou expressed easily with his fine acting skills. From an innocent, sympathetic youth to a raging, paranoid warlord to a wise and cunning strategist. Ichikawa makes Takeda Shingen a character easy to love by both the protagonist Yamamoto Kansuke and the audience.

Check out Ichikawa’s acting prowess…How did he managed to contort his face like that?!

I also enjoyed the convincing act as Yamamoto Kansuke by thespian Uchino Masaaki. He could make his eyes wet with tears in a second when Kansuke is touched by Takeda Shingen’s benevolence. Masaaki also limped about so convincingly I was wondering if he had something tied to his foot to make him do so. I particularly enjoy his expressions when Kansuke is scheming something or is put into a comical situations like having to provide marriage counselling services to Takeda Shingen.

There are other lovable characters like Sanada Yukitaka (Yukimura’s grandfather) who fed the unconscious Kansuke horse shit (a family remedy…?) after Kansuke was shot with a gun.

As for Uesugi Kenshin by Gackt … (-_-|||) … I’ll have to wait and see in the 38th episode onwards when Uesugi Kenshin starts to battle with Takeda Shingen.

Mid-Autumn Festival 2008 (ムーンケーキを食べよう)

What better way to celebrate the mid-autumn festival in an island where it’s summer all year round than gorge on mooncakes?

The wife of my dad’s  KL business partner is a culinary goddess and the snowskin yam mooncakes she made is absolutely divine! The skin has the same chewy texture as mochi rice cakes and the yam filling is not too sweet unlike the typical sugar overload in a traditional mooncake. I can’t help but sneak into the kitchen to steal a hapless mooncake to satisfy my cravings.  Mmmm…. Just like love, this mooncake can’t be bought with money.

My new fave: Gackpoid in niconico

ガックポイド (Gackpoid)

Perhaps this vocaloid has the most number of beautiful (and kuso) fanarts ever drawn. Just looking at the few professionally rendered artworks that appear on niconico videos is enough to wish for a Gackpoid anthology… …

I came across Gackpoid in an Ikebukuro electronics store while searching for a pen tablet with Chihaya san. I was amazed Gackt actually lent his voice for this audio  software and didn’t think much on the wonders it could do in music composition and arrangement. It’s the name ‘Gackt’ that boosts sales, no?

Until I heard some of the music compositions/ arrangements and other songs sung using Gackpoid on niconico video (Japan’s better version of Youtube). An original song composed by a nico user called いーえろP which I find really good is Grave Post’s ‘Kimi no iru basho‘. The vocals are totally synthesised from Gackpoid software. Hard to believe when it sounds so natural.

The good ones are awesome. The vocaloid could make the vocals sound so erotic! One nico user commented that her ears are made pregnant after listening to a BL game theme song ‘Under the darkness’ sung by Gackpoid.

The kuso ones are also awesome! And I’m not being sarcastic about the kuso ones because they are so brain-numbingly hilarious! Here’s ‘Dancing Samurai’. Starting dancing or go perform hara kiri ( ritual suicide by disembowelment)!

A hardcore Gackt-obssessed fan would probably wish the author is burnt on the stake. There’s even a song sung by Gackpoid about wanting to eat shit and not leaving any behind (Unko tabetai…).

It’s amazing how a product in the Japanese market could shape the culture of the online community. The distinct colour of each vocaloid is represented by food items. It was not known who started it. For example, green-haired Miku’s edible mascot is Japanese spring onion known as negi. As for purple-haired Gackpoid, his representative item is eggplant aka nasu. Yummy!

R and R in Kuala Lumpur(お宅ライフ)

It’s a 5-day rest and relax program for me in Kuala Lumpur this week.

My itinerary is : eat, sleep, draw, play video games, read manga/doujins and surf the net. And play with my cousin’s lovely bitch, Jing Jing. (sorry about the language…bad influence from my cousin’s latest purchase, Grand Theft Auto IV)

The game is very violent, proliferating with swear words and senseless criminal activities. It’s like junk food, bad for the health but really tasty. The main character Niko, an East European immigrant, is free to earn a quick buck driving taxis, chaffeuring gangsters, extortion, running down innocent bystanders… etc and he could spend it all on booze, go on a date (and getting laid) or strip clubs (my favourite).

Otherwise, he could stay home and watch the TV which the player can enjoy. The dialogue and TV programmes poke fun at the social issues plaguing America. For example, one of the anti-terrorist messages on Niko’s TV flashes ‘Brown=Terrorist’ in white bold letters across the screen. Highly entertaining.

Just imagine, two twenty-plus year old girls watching strippers gyrating and thrusting into a game character’s face on the computer screen … (>w<;)
